Top 10 Games 2018
It was yet another stacked year for games with so many incredible releases arriving throughout the entirety of the calendar. Working from that, across the multiple platforms we compiled a list of the best featuring a wide selection of genres and titles for the games that we most enjoyed.
These are definitely the best of what we played in terms of quality and even just generally the time we spent with them. Keep in mind that everyone's list is different, this collection excludes expansion content and remakes/remasters. Sure, other games should have probably made the list, but these are all games that we truly did enjoy playing. With that, here are our top 10 games of 2018.
#10: Strange Brigade
I'm sure this might come across as an odd choice for some, but it's a lot of fun. It's great in a cooperative setting and just an enjoyable, casual shooter. It has that old school adventure feeling to it and it's just different. The maps are cool, filled with secrets and of course deadly creatures. The voice over was fun and there's a good amount of content to it.
#9: Dead Cells
What a strange, yet absolutely badass game. It came out of nowhere and was just addicting to play. I kept going and going, always hoping it would turn out better. Sometimes it did, other times I met an untimely end. I thought this was beautiful designed and just smooth to play. My one friend was completely hooked on this for weeks, it was a lot of fun to discuss progression on.
#8: Hitman 2
This was an excellent follow-up to what was a really exciting episodic series. This release is all about replay-ability and just the option to be completely creative. You were given a series of gorgeous and challenging locations to eliminate people within. You could do so in too many ways, and come back for more as they create fresh challenges.
#7: Far Cry 5
What a fun game, beautiful and vast world with some wild enemies to take on. There were many ways to traverse, things to do and of course a lengthy twisted narrative to work through. The companions were a great addition and it's a very polished experience that expands an enjoyable franchise
#6: Assassin's Creed Odyssey
Working from the amazing Origins, Odyssey expands the concept further. I'm honestly not a huge fan of the sailing but despite that this was one mighty effort. The branched narrative of two siblings, the secretive societies and of course the mythical inclusions. The choice of factions was nice, and it was just a different yet expansive take on the series.
#5: Forza Horizon 4
I wasn't sure if it was possible to top the third entry, but they did it. The gorgeous landscape of Britain is unleashed with distinct weather variations and too much content. You can spend countless hours driving down stunning roads and blasting excellent music along the way. The improvements to multiplayer were exciting and it's just amazing in general.
#4: Shadow of the Tomb Raider
Lara Croft's origin story concluded in a perfect way giving us a look at a stronger, and more matured character. You got a good expansion of her past while also finally defining the type of person she is. They refined the movement, narrative and general experience as you explored vast hub areas. You could solve side puzzles, battle in challenging tombs and enjoy a livelier world.
#3: Red Dead Redemption II
The ultimate western adventure brought one of the most incredible worlds ever created. The attention to detail was remarkable as you worked across a lengthy narrative. There was so much to do from general missions, to hunting and even side adventures. The multiplayer wasn't quite there, when it did release the extra costs were somewhat questionable so that dipped it a bit for me.
#2: Marvel's Spider-Man
There's finally what's basically a perfect Spider-Man game, there's so much heart and development to the character here. They managed to perfectly capture the thrill of movement to the point I didn't care for fast travel and it's so enjoyable. The wealth of characters were given a clear purpose and there was so much going on. An insanely awesome world to explore with mechanics that further the action in a good way.
#1: God of War
They really delivered on bringing this series back and doing something completely new with it. The world is one of the best in terms of design and visuals for this generation. The narrative is self-contained, emotional and it has a perfect father/son journey within it. The action was intense and Kratos shines like never before in this. It sets up more, while still being a conclusive piece that was a simple mission. I won't ever forget the stunning worlds, the scenic travel or the stunned new gods as I beat them into a pulp.
