State of Decay 2: Daybreak Review

"Hold the Walls!"

Campaign

State of Decay 2: Daybreak is an expansion DLC that does something different with the game. This mode is based around a new coop focused area that is essentially a zombie siege. Working alone or in a group of up to four battle against waves in an attempt to keep a technician safe. The multiplayer is handled with drop-in/drop-out functionality as you attempt to keep pushing just a tad longer. You're working from within walls to protect barriers as a technician attempts to work on this drop.

While you can fight inside of these walls, you're able to jump over them to take out the undead or even repair them as they become damaged. Every round you'll get a small break where special supply drops will appear in the back zombie spawning area. You play as a Red Talon soldier, with new skills and weapons with the option to respawn if you die. These Red Talon troops are also integrated into the core game as new facility options and you can even bring a soldier with you. There's a new ferocious enemy called the Blood Plague Juggernaut to battle and some fun toys to use.

The Conclusion

State of Decay 2: Daybreak is a fine expansion, though a limited one that can feel repetitive. I really liked the idea of this zombie siege design and I wish they had taken it further. It feels similar as you just battle the same formations over multiple waves within the same area.

It would have been nice to see different environments or more dynamic setups as it's very straight forward in terms of how everything has been positioned. I noticed some minor bugs here and there, though it was running fine for the most part. There are benefits for the regular game, but this really is a separate entity. It's a great time in coop and I definitely suggest playing it that way; it's a solid option for those that want to experience more State of Decay, but with others.
