RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures Review

"Casual Thrills"

Campaign

April 3, 2019 at 3:54am

The franchise is certainly well known, and in recent years it really hasn't been in the spotlight. With RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures you get a more casual theme park building experience, but a decent one. There are a number of modes, and many objects to play with in it. It's rather limited in terms of scope, yet still has quite a fair bit to it. To start there's the campaign type area where you're challenged to build a park.

There are further variations on challenges as well, if you need something more specific to test your skills. There's also just regular sandbox options and I like free building so I spend my time there mostly in these types of modes. You're able to craft some fairly complex coasters with easy to setup controls or just go wild with building. There are a decent selection of ways to play this, though nothing out of the ordinary. It would have been nice to see something truly different, it was also wasn't very difficult for those that like more of an extreme park building challenge.

Gameplay

This is a very clean, easy to understand type of experience. It's very accessible for any type of audience, perhaps geared too much towards the younger ones. You won't have issues learning the base mechanics, but once those are understood it really doesn't go any further in terms of complexity. There are a wide range of items to build whether you're producing shops, or rides. While it may seem like a lot at first, I still desired to see more options and customization.

You can adjust colors, but it doesn't get too personal when it comes to editing the specific attractions. The coasters do offer more customization choices, some pre-built options as well. I found the park to be strangely narrow in design, the building areas felt somewhat limited at times. There's some nice complexity within the world though, lots of people running around and enjoying the rides. I always like viewing this part of these types of games.

The Conclusion

RollerCoaster Tycoon Adventures delivers an accessible and more casual take on the classic theme park builder. There's some decent variation within the areas you can play in, and it has a number of options for building rides. Still, after having built a large number of attractions and food items, it really didn't seem like there was all that much present.

There are a few modes to play, these cover the basics you'd expect though they don't go wild. It's a very tame and streamlined take on the franchise. It's largely accessible to the younger audience, I'm not sure others will find enough complexity or a challenge here. Still, it's fun to play and build within. It does some things right, just doesn't go big enough being a fine time overall.
