Victor Vran: Overkill Edition Review

"Face your Demons"

Campaign

Cleanse the land as demon hunter Victor Vran in this top-down action RPG from Haemimont Games. A portal to the demon realm has been opened in the kingdom of Zagoravia. Now monsters freely roam the streets and the castle is the last bastion of humanity in the realm. Many demon and monster hunters have answered Queen Katarina’s plea for help to stem the flow of demons into her kingdom. One of these hunters, Adrian, has not been heard from for some time and Victor has come to Zagoravia to find out what has happened to him. Although Victor planned on leaving the doomed kingdom after finding Adrian, their meeting convinces Victor to stay in Zagoravia.

Committing to finding the source of the outbreak and the Queen’s role in damning her kingdom. Victor takes to the streets with a variety of means to dispatch his enemies. Melee weapons include swords, hammers, scythes and rapiers. Ranged weapons like the shotgun, lightning gun and tomes. Lastly, the abilities that set him apart from his demon-hunter brethren are his arcane demon powers putting him on even ground with his demonic foes. Not all doom-and-gloom, Victor Vran: Overkill Edition has its share of lighthearted elements. There are conveniently named NPCs, silly undead that can infect Victor with their madness and a patronizing disembodied voice that taunts and mocks Victor throughout the campaign.

Gameplay

Victor Vran: Overkill Edition looks clean and runs smoothly with a player-controlled camera which is excellent at ferreting out secrets. The soundtrack lends the right amount of ambiance without being intrusive during climactic moments. Combat runs well with specials being mapped out on-screen for ease-of-use. Weapon and demon power loadouts can be swapped out on the fly to tailor to any combat situation. Skills do not use the familiar, sometimes irreversible skill trees in favor of a less impermanent tarot card style buffs. Leveling up unlocks more card slots and cards may be swapped out as needed. Weapons will often confer different bonuses giving more customized combat scenarios. Different costumes confer bonuses that can be exploited with a friend in coop campaign. Each area of the map has a list of challenges that may be completed for XP or treasure bonuses along with hexes to challenge players.
