Crypt of the Serpent King Review

"Grey Crawling"

Campaign

Crypt of the Serpent King is a simple first person 3D dungeon crawler where you go around slashing creatures and collecting keys. Each level comes somewhat random though each follow a very strict set of level pieces that makes it all feel very similar. In each level you move around collecting keys in order to unlock a boss to fight.

The rooms you explore are filled with enemies to kill, chests to open for food or gold and a trap with a key. The traps are extremely simple, yet I had some intense issues with later lava ones as the jumping is awkward. It would have been nice to have a better mix of enemies of levels or even some more maps to fill out the experience.

There are three levels of difficulty though there's little difference between the modes. The goal here is repetition as you continue gain XP to improve the basic skills available and collect gold to unlock new weapons. There's a decent set of levels available though it would have been nice to have something else in the game as well.

Gameplay

The graphics are actually fairly decent though blend in too well together as everything is a bland grey color. It would have been nice to see some slightly brighter colors anywhere as it all becomes the same after awhile.

The combat wasn't exactly exciting as you just slash enemies or move around them so they can't hit you. I did find the audio to be quite great in the game from the regular theme to the clashes of weapons. Characters were also well designed though once again boring and it would have been better to see a mix of them on levels.

The Conclusion

I didn't particularly have any issues when playing aside from the jumping, but there isn't anything here that feels too unique. I like the concept, but it would have been nice to see this expanded on with some more variation within the game or even the dungeon in general.

I wasn't bored while playing though I didn't find great amounts of challenge except for jumping to grab keys over lava and that was annoying. This is a decent dungeon crawler that runs without any issues, yet is very basic overall.
