Heroes & Legends: Conquerors of Kolhar Review

"Beautiful Turn Based Combat"

Campaign

The very long titled game of which we will refer to as Heroes & Legends has finally released after awhile of me playing it in early release form. I'm glad that other players will now be able to experience the interesting turn based RPG game that seems to almost run on some sort of automation. This is actually nice as I usually detest the genre in general with this game having good enough pacing that I'm not bored. That leads me into one issue where it can get repetitive to a degree with combat and some levels taking a bit of a grind to get by. In aspects of levelling your character you will be given a three choice selection in which you choose a direction you want to develop them. They also each get a set of skill slots for you to determine what abilities or aspects they should bring to your minor squad in combat. This can range from team abilities to individual ones and I actually did prefer to buff one character compared to another which I determined to be my healer class. Along with this there's a crafting system with minerals that you build armour or superior weapons with. This is mainly fed through the crafting system that takes old weapons that you've gained in combat and recycles them. Now for item gain there's a wheel in battle that constantly cycles and allows you to somewhat nitpick what you want while balancing those health potions as well. It all keeps the game fluid and draws your attention for the full time or else the team will parish. Enemies come in waves for quite a long time so that was stretched a bit on levels and your team faces them off one versus one though on the occasion there can be splash damage. You're also free to swap positions and face off in the best situation you feel for the team. Levels are straight forward from that with main quests, side quests and fun decision quests that pop up as you progress through the story. The areas and environments looks beautiful along with some interesting sets of creatures to face across the game. Dialogue is also present in text form and I didn't feel at times I was into the whole story. I was more interested in progressing and quick reading what was going on though every player is different in that regard.

Gameplay

It all plays solid and everything rotates on this automated turn based system as waves roll in. This could be boring for some, though honestly for me improves what would be rather dry gameplay into something addictive and enjoyable. The graphics look beautiful and it still keep the RPG aspect that many adore as you can see your characters getting these upgrades. I do wish loot drops of weapons or armour came more often as I felt my high level characters still had awful equipment despite my best efforts with the crafting system or in-game loot.

The Conclusion

Overall this is a solid and addictive automated turn based game. It won't be for everyone, but the pace keeps the action going and creatures coming. At times the amount of waves feels overwhelming and a grind, yet it's very rewarding to complete. The crafting system is interesting to a degree and people will definitely use it to their advantage. Characters are interesting enough in Heroes & Legends though I wasn't drawn into the story as much as I could have been. If it sounds like your type of game I definitely suggest playing it as the game is very addictive.
