The Long Dark Impressions

"It's a Harsh World"

The Long Dark is a game that I've been following for a long time as its premise and stlye has looked amazing. That of course was instantly proven correct once I first loaded a Sandbox play of the game up. The sky is just breathtaking and the art style of the world around you is stunning. I should also mention that what I've played is Early Access on Steam from which the game will change a bunch over the course of its development like many other games are doing these days. This seemed to effect little within the game except for some areas which were blocked off for further development. I largely played only the Sandbox mode which is pure survival and I'd like to mention that there will be a full campaign like experience in the future with some great voice talent included as well. Now when you first start out in this very harsh world, you just look around for a second to grasp the scenery. There is a glorious sky, many trees and maybe some structures depending on where you start. This is what makes every play unique is that you never know if there will be access to food which is so damn vital or if you're just screwed from the start. I did the logical thing and checked the menus out with are very intuitive and simple for people to understand. You can also view that all from the video I attached below which is my first attempts at playing through everything. I though it only logical to collect some fire wood as a fire is very important. I had some issues getting it started with the blowing winds until I could find a good wind breaker for me to start it under. From there I decided to melt snow and of course boil it as you don't want to get sick from the unclean water though I'm fairly sure snow is mostly good to drink if it's fresh. The next thought was focused on my calorie meter which was quickly falling from these activities. This is when things took a quick turn for the worst as I had no idea where to find food. I waited it out for a second thinking until I slept quickly then went out to search for food. I later died of environmental conditions, it was rough.

Which then brings me to the next few times I played where things were killing me from the environment to hunger and wolves. There truly is a bunch of things trying to kill you in this, should also mention I chose to play as the female character primarily in this particular game because why not. Both have unique voice overs depending on the gender and it mixes things up for sure. I actually once got a proper play in for survival which had me spawn right beside a cabin area which you can see like eight minutes or so into the video if you feel like watching the experience. This had food, clothes and other supplies along with providing a safe place for me to survive in. I had set a fire and was just living well for a few minutes until the fire went out. I was unable to collect the tinder needed through the quick search and only had limited water supplies. I was also running low on food so set out down some tracks. Through this venture I was attacked my multiple wolves forcing me to bandage up while also running into some interesting wreckage. Eventually I made it to this dam which didn't have any food so I set for towards an elevated outpost. Also having to out run a wolf I felt so proud grabbing a snack bar to finally eat. I turned around to be instantly mauled by that wolf, it was heart breaking. Though this is the unforgiving and touch world that The Long Dark is. I definitely suggest checking it out while not completely capturing Canada haha, it's a great environment. From there I look forward to writing more in the future on its development over Early Access on Steam. Finally watch the video below to see some of this actually play out!
