SteamWorld Dig 2 Impressions

SteamWorld Dig 2 is the exciting and really gorgeous sequel to a classic digging game. In this sequel things are fully animated and they look fantastic. While at Pax West 2017 I was able to get a preview of the game on Nintendo Switch and I was very happy to do so. Once I had heard they would be showing the game off there I knew I wanted to take a look at it as I quite enjoyed the first one. In the game you get to dig around searching for things, it sounds simple but it can grow to be complex.

You'll find rewards, gather water to run tools and basically work towards better upgrades. These upgrades allow you to tackle enemies more easily, battle efficiently within dungeon type areas and of course mine further. Some blocks require better tools to destroy and while I got some nice items to use in the demo of it, players start out with essentially nothing. This adds a sense of progression and exploration as you venture across a massive world. Most of it was covered in mist as it hadn't been explored when I was playing, but the area of play is incredible. It also carries a rather lovely steampunk look which I should mention in case you haven't played the first game.

SteamWorld Dig 2 looks great no matter where you play it on the Nintendo Switch as I got to view it on a large screen and on the undocked version as well. It was actually quite magical that a developer could take you somewhere out of the busy area to sit down and play a game without any issues. I just find the whole concept of picking up the Switch to go to still be rather fascinating. I definitely enjoyed playing the game as it looks like everything one would expect for a sequel to the first game. It's larger, filled with more things to do and provides another new fresh cast of characters to dig with.

There are collectibles to search for if that's your sort of thing or you can go through what I've been told is a long campaign. Aside from releasing on the Nintendo Switch, the game will also be available on Playstation 4 and PC just a little after. I was also told that a Xbox One version isn't out of the question as they ported the first game over. I'm looking forward to checking out SteamWorld Dig 2 as I enjoyed the first and found the teaser I got at Pax to be rather promising.
