Yet Another Zombie Defense HD Review

"Zombie Twin Stick"

Multiplayer

Yet Another Zombie Defense HD is the return of a classic Xbox 360 indie title with a completely revamped experience. It's the same game you might remember, but in an entirely new engine. The results are quite good as this is still a fun little zombie game. There isn't anything too complex to it, yet it delivers with some enjoyment. The game is split into a few modes that can be played locally or online with up to four players at once. The first and perhaps the most popular mode is the "Defense" where you're attempting to survive night after night.

The zombies don't stop coming and they continue to grow in difficulty. Each round you'll earn money to buy new items such as blockades, guns or even automated turrets. Occasionally you'll also get the option to improve your skills, it's all about keeping alive. The second mode is Endless where the zombies hordes just keeping piling on, don't stop at all. The final option is Deathmatch where hordes of zombies swarm the screen as you aim to eliminate other players, it's really simplistic without selections for how it's setup.

Gameplay

The visuals are mostly fine, it looks like an indie title quite honestly. The world is bland, it's just this pavement type area and that's it. It would have been nice to get some terrain or even different color options. It's a violent and gore filled experience with so many bodies filling up the floor the further you go in some modes. Some of the AI isn't the brightest being awkward, but for the most part they're intense.

The Xbox One X enhancement was good, it brings 4k resolution through a menu toggle. It's not a huge change, but an instant increase in quality and texture. The twin stick action handles well, it's great in a team and quite fun. The weapons can get wild though it was hard to tell whether you're hitting the zombies with some of them.

The Conclusion

Yet Another Zombie Defense HD is a fine enhanced version of this old indie game, there's just not a whole lot to it. There are a few modes to play, with the defense option being the most popular. It's a nice fast paced twin stick shooter with a wide range of weapons to unleash. It gets quite intense the further you go along as the undead may not be your only threat.

It would have been nice to see more environments present, it just seems incredibly limited. It's great that the game is Xbox One X enhanced as that does improve the visuals quite a bit making it very sharp. It's also a nice touch to have online or local multiplayer, especially for the cooperative modes. I wish there was more to the game, but if the core content interests you it can be a good time. Placing some barricades, grabbing some friends and then blasting away at the hordes.
