The ACA NEOGEO Metal Slug 2 is part of a collection of updated titles from the classic arcade era. The game is a run and gun shooter that has players travel across various points on the globe while blasting away an array of enemies. This is done over a lengthy campaign that's actually really fun to play. In this version of Metal Slug 2 there's the original Japanese Version and the English Version to play. In this area there are a variety of settings present to just enjoy the campaign. Adjust the aspect ratio, tweak certain elements to make it look classic and more which is a nice touch. Aside from the core campaign are Hi Score and Caravan modes. Hi Score is a mode where ou compete against others online for the best scores without using saves. Caravan is a mode where you compete for scores within five minute period without using saves. Together these modes add enough of a twist to add some extra value to the campaign.

Gameplay

The game actually looks surprisingly good considering its age and the pixel art holds up. It's very detailed featuring some smaller touches to the environment to make it more realistic. Certain things will wave, enemies will react with emotion to you and it looks good. It's also a lot of fun to play as you tackle a wide variety of enemies across multiple environments. There are also occasional vehicle stretches to enjoy where you get access to a very powerful ride for a bit. These help a lot with the massive robotic monsters that show up at the end of each level. You can also find some secrets within levels and there's the option to rescue prisoners for bonuses as well.

The Conclusion

This classic game is presented beautifully within this package feeling like a modern release of the arcade version. It's got some slightly updated modes that are matched with multiple options in how the game is presented. If you're a fan of the original then this is the best way to experience it and even newcomers will find this particular title a blast. I certainly didn't expect to enjoy this so much as I went right through the campaign and mashed my way to some high scores.
