Call of Duty: WWII is a return to form and tradition as the series heads to World War II for the first time in about a decade. This move was a great decision because the setting is unreal on the modern console. It's even better with the Call of Duty WWII Xbox One X enhancement that brings the game to a native 4k with 60fps across the experience and glorious HDR. Whether you're battling through the emotionally intense campaign, blasting away the undead in zombies or smashing the beaches of Normandy in multiplayer it's glorious. It's just something else seeing the game run so smooth with the high fluidity and it's much more next-gen than AI fish.
I've really been blown away by how fast everything runs, how incredible it all looks and just the setting being captured so well. You feel that intense level of realism with each shot that whizzes by, the visceral scenes around you and the mass levels of destruction. The D-Day segment was particularly traumatizing, as were a number of the other cinematic focused areas. The rubble contains so much depth in the streets and the campaign truly stands out with its next level visual experience. Bits of the various houses break off, wood dynamically splinters from bullets and each scene while large in scale really does have high levels of junk thrown around for an authentic environment. War is never clean and the second World War really left a trail of broken cities.
It's not just the single player that benefits from the graphic improvements, the multiplayer and zombies both look visually stunning. The gruesome zombies really have that extra level of gore to them as the blood sinks into the dirt and across the screen. The various "display" zombies from experiments are rather striking as you walk by them and the large pool of blood in the world below shines with the low light. That HDR really delivers here as while the map is darker, it's a well lit zombie map from the soft moon and various warming lamp light that's found throughout.
The multiplayer is great and with War being my current favorite addition it's where I've spent the most time. The level of detail online is fantastic and while multiplayer maps are usually toned down graphically in most games there's nothing held back here. It looks just like the campaign though somewhat more open to support the multiple players shooting one another. I didn't notice the HDR as much here just due to how the maps are designed, but it's still very present across a number of them. Particularly the selection of day based levels and one where you're around flak guns as that whole map is just intense in the background. Across its entirety, Call of Duty: WWII is best played in 4k with the smooth 60fps and this graphic boost greatly improves the experience.
