After the announcement of the Fallout 4 Season Pass being given a much larger treatment of DLC we finally get that first bit with the Automatron. This pack adds some side campaign levels that explore this mechanized robotic overlord that has terrorized some areas of the Commonwealth. The lone wanderer then picks up a transmission from a lone robot and the quest to discover the truth begins. There are only a couple missions in this pack and most of them revolve around the collection of parts or finding additional signals. It really doesn't provide a very good story in terms of narrative, but some more missions to tackle. The story was also a bit of a grind to some extent as there were just piles of enemy robots present that soak bullets. This got even worse when it came to the ending sequence which was just waves upon waves of robots with various powerful skills and after awhile of getting slaughtered the game even felt sorry for me switching up the attacks to simpler models. The ending was somewhat satisfying and gave a glimpse towards what could have been an interesting story, but there was no story build-up to that point so ultimately it was just whatever and move on. The best part of this pack which is actually useful is the ability to build and customize robots. There are tons of special mod pieces to be found on destroyed robots which can be used to build your own robotic companions and those can also be used to improve the ones you already have. There are a number of mods to be found on your journeys and some neat modifications to make, even on some of your older friends as well.

The Conclusion

Automatron is great for those that need more Fallout and it gives a couple extra hours of time in the Commonwealth. It had potential to build an interesting story, but the experience was largely empty with an ending that hinted at what could have been a well structured plot. The only good part of this pack is the robot customization with the robot workshop to build at your settlements. This stand assists in not only improving current robots, but also in making entirely new ones from scratch if you desire. Not to say it was a horrible expansion as it was decent, I just was expecting a bit more of a story or even the areas you visit as they were largely the same throughout. Ultimately this was a weaker addition to the game though I'm sure many will grab regardless or just be granted it as part of the season pass. Looking forward I hope the future additions to the game offer a bit more at least a better developed story. As a final note this pack will most likely take you between two to three hours to complete in its entirety though that's mostly due to robotic grinding.
