LEGO Dimensions Launch Guide

LEGO Dimensions is certain to become a massive hit as it combines the well known LEGO Games with a concept of real life LEGO. In Dimensions you purchase various sets or individual characters to place on this magical portal from the starter kit and then those blocks transfer into the game. It's a well known concept that started with Skylanders and continued with Disney Infinity, though I'm certain LEGO will hit the right spots. Now, unlike these other games the starting waves for LEGO Dimensions are certainly stacked with something for everyone. I'm going to do my best and cut down this list to essentials of what you may want to start with. Personally I'm looking at a cost of $170 for launch with the Starter Kit, Portal Set and the Back to the Future Set. With that out of the way it's time to take a deep look at which of these sets are the best to pick up for your Dimensions launch.

Wave 1 on September 27, 2015
Within this launch wave there will be the starter set; three levels packs, two characters packs and fifteen individual characters.

The very first thing that everyone will need to look at is the Starter Pack, you obviously need this to play the game so it may actually be hard to get your hands on this since they seem to be pre-ordering out well on some platforms. This starter pack will cost $99.99 USD/$109.99CA.

The next thing to look at is the level sets which will grant characters and extra levels with them. For launch three of these packs are available; Portal, Back to the Future and The Simpsons. With these three I definitely suggest going with Portal and Back to the Future since both are going to bring great side adventures. Portal is set to be a puzzle like story feeling much like the traditional Portal game whereas Back to the Future is just amazing and video already shown looks promising. With The Simpsons I'm unsure how entertaining of an environment they're actually going to produce with the content and suggest avoiding that package. Each of these level sets will cost $29.99 (both regions) and include one figure, one vehicle and the play area.

Following the level packs we have the team packs with two at launch being Jurassic World and Scooby Doo. I'm not particularly interested in either of these packs so for opinion on this I'd go with Jurassic World as a preference if buying either. When it comes down to these two aside from my opinion I would go for preference of which franchise you prefer if you do plan on buying one of these at launch. The team packs cost $24.99 (both regions) including two figures and two vehicles.

This final portion of the launch guide takes a look at the fifteen individual characters that area available at launch. This portion will be the most difficult to sift through due to the numbers present, but I'll try my best. My top picks from this pile are Wonder Woman (really strong in LEGO Movie game), Benny (spaceship!) and the Wicked Witch (looks strong from trailers so far). These picks were mostly done on their abilities and stengths from pasts LEGO games along with what I've seen of gameplay. One major problem with these loose figures is that many have been in past sets if you collect LEGO so that will most likely come into your decision as well. Furthermore another influence of choice is whether or not you like the franchises present as there are many Lord of the Rings and Ninjago present in this first wave. Personally I'm going to wait on these single figures and suggest you do as well since there are some neat singles coming later such as Slimer and Stay Puft. These single packs come in at $14.99 (both regions) granting one player and one vehicle.

I hope this LEGO Dimensions launch guide was helpful in sorting out this difficult first wave as it looks to be quite the expensive game when you add everything together. I look forward to it since I love LEGO and the LEGO games have mostly been great so this seems like a winning combination. Will look at building further guides as more waves release over time.
